Picnics are a great family outing idea, with Singapore’s mostly pleasant weather and the may scenic outdoor spots around the island. Plus, with Singapore's clear skies and light winds, it’s the perfect time and place to plan one.

Besides a well-stocked picnic basket, some careful planning beforehand goes a long way to ensure things go smoothly on the day of the picnic. It doesn’t have to be a monumental task when everyone chips in — even the kids!

Who’s In-Charge of What?

Once you’ve confirmed who is going, the next thing is to put people to be in charge of different things for the picnic. Assign someone to be in charge of the menu, transport, logistics, budget, etc.

With everyone pitching in, the work is spread out, fostering a sense of teamwork and shared responsibility to ensure the picnic turns out well!

Younger ones could also be assigned easy tasks like picking the games and entertainment so they too can feel involved.

The Picnic Spot

With a large group of people, figuring out the transport options is vital. Which is the most accessible picnic spot by public transport or car if someone is driving? Is there a washing point or restroom near the picnic spot? With little ones in tow, a restroom nearby is a crucial consideration.

Other small things that to consider is whether it’s feasible to roll a trolley or stroller to the picnic grounds.

What’s on the Menu?

Skip the heavy dishes with gravy and opt for finger food and ‘dry’ options such as pie, mashed potato, salad, skewered meat, cold cuts, cheese, bread and the like.

For a well-rounded meal, remember the ‘sweet, sour, salty’ rule and to include a portion from each flavour profile. A safe bet would be to do a quick check of everybody’s food preference before deciding on the menu—the last thing you’d want on a family picnic is a meal nobody is happy with!

Finally do not forget the beverages or dessert. What’s a picnic without a refreshing iced tea to wash everything down with?

Picnic Gear Eessentials

Make a checklist of the essential picnic items such as cutlery, plates, cups, serviettes, sauces, condiments and the like. Food-related items aside, include also things such as wet wipes, bottled water, mosquito repellent, handheld fans, and of course, a picnic mat or two.

Games and Entertainment

This pretty much depends on your choice of a picnic spot, and whether anything will be happening there. A frisbee or beach ball could keep young ones entertained while the adults chat, and if you’re planning a beach picnic, a change of clothes and towel might be necessary too. You could even prepare a picnic music playlist to create some ambience too.

Once you’ve gotten the hang of planning, you could even try different picnic themes—who knows, the holiday picnic could well become the new get-together ritual for the whole family!
