Singapore Heritage Festival is a special edition this year in commemoration of Singapore’s Bicentennial. Events and programmes will explore Singapore’s history and showcase Singapore’s heritage and culture. Taking place over four weekends, various events have been organized around precincts such as Kampong Glam and Bedok. Explore the nooks and crannies of these spaces and uncover their lesser-known stories along with the fascinating Singaporeans behind them!

Going Play-ces: A Wanderful Exploration of New Lands!
This will be Playeum’s fifth hands-on interactive exhibition, co-created by Playeum, Participate In Design and artists from D/SINI and The Animal Book Co. Play-ces gives children from age 1 to 12 opportunities to explore and navigate through various landscapes. Children will be encouraged to engage with their imagination, while thinking about sustainability, innovation and the role of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) in everyday life and the future.

This is an excellent opportunity to let your kids develop their creativity and learn about the importance of sustainability in our daily life for a brighter future.

Chetti Melaka of the Straits- Rediscovering Peranakan Indian Communities

Chetti Melaka
This unique community of people is of Tamil ancestry, they are mix-blooded, initially with Malay matriarchal lineage principal, and over time, with Chinese and others. The land of origin of this uniquely cultured group is Melaka which remains embedded in their name wherever they may be. Situated at the crossroads of the Indian Ocean and the Far East, the Malay Archipelago has always been a region of cultural confluence and diversity, which over time brought many migrants with multicultural backgrounds which developed the Chetti Melaka community.

Bring your little ones along this journey of education and discovery of a community they have never heard of before.

Wild Rumpus
Your kids favour something quirky? The Artground presents Wild Rumpus- an imaginative world of furry, gentle creatures for your children to squeeze and cuddle with. This artwork of friendly monsters is done up by Adeline Loo, who quit her job as a paralegal to pursue her interests in fibre arts, and seeks to create works which are immersive and textural. Her artworks are mainly made with waste fabric and upcycled materials. Get your children active and immerse them in this wonderful world of squishy monsters.

Limelight 2019
Limelight is a series that gives some of the best school choirs and symphonic bands in Singapore an opportunity to perform at the Esplanade Concert Hall. Through this series, we hope to inspire excellence in performance among schools by offering them another platform to showcase their musical abilities to the public. Limelight is a campaign that hopes to bring the arts to communities in need. Half of the ticket proceeds will go toward supporting the Esplanade’s community engagement programmes that aims to bring the arts to at-risk youths, the elderly and people with special needs. Let’s take this time to help out those in need.

My Grandfather’s Road

My Grandfather’s Road
This is a recollection of stories of Neo Kim Seng, who grew up in Pasir Panjang on Neo Pee Teck Lane, a side road named after his grandfather. These stories helped him to reconnect with his idyllic childhood and his family history. It explores how personal stories make who we are. He directed this performance to demonstrate how societal changes, policies and snippets of history defines who we are today. Be enlightened by how everyone’s personal stories, interactions and decisions play a part in creating our society and our homeland. Join this story telling performance in both Cantonese and English, and who knows, some of the stories may resonate with you in a surprising way.

Baby Space
For those families with pre-walking babies, Baby Space is the perfect place to bring your babies to! Baby Space is a multi-sensory installation where contemporary dance, music and visual arts meld together to form an encounter with the arts. Babies will get to interact with the dancers and explore the installation in their own unique ways even after the performance is over. This special blend of dance and arts for babies was first conceived by an award-winning Swedish choreographer, who focuses on the interrelationship of the body, mind and the environment. You can start to introduce the arts and movements to your precious babies at an early stage here.
