Young children learn best through hands-on experiences. Everyday activities provide many opportunities to introduce early maths concepts in a natural way.
For example, while playing with blocks, you can talk about which tower is taller or shorter. During meals, count pieces of fruit together or compare who has more grapes. At bath time, discuss which container holds more water. These simple conversations help children understand mathematical ideas without formal lessons.
Simple Ways to Build Early Maths Skills
As you go about your day, encourage your child to notice and talk about numbers and quantities. You could:
Count steps while climbing stairs.
Sort toys by colour, shape, or size.
Name shapes you see around the home and neighbourhood.
Compare objects using words like "big", "small", "more", and "less".
Create simple patterns using blocks or beads.
When your child encounters a challenge, encourage them to try different solutions. For example, if a block does not fit into a shape sorter, ask, "What else could we try?" This helps develop problem-solving skills and confidence.

Daily outings offer many opportunities to explore maths concepts.
On public transport, count the number of MRT stops before reaching your destination. At the playground, count swings, slides, or steps on climbing structures. While shopping at the supermarket, let your child help place three apples or two cartons of milk into the trolley.
