Distraction is one of the most useful tools for parents of young toddlers. When your child is becoming tired, frustrated, restless, or upset, gently shifting their attention to something else can help prevent difficult behaviour before it starts.

For example, if your toddler is fussing while waiting, becoming frustrated with a toy, or struggling to share, drawing their attention to a different activity can often help them calm down and move on.

Many parents use distraction naturally without even realising it. You might point out a bird outside the window, sing a favourite song, offer a different toy, or make a funny face to get your child's attention. These simple strategies can be very effective.

Distraction can also help keep toddlers safe. If your child is reaching for something unsafe or heading towards a dangerous area, redirecting their attention to a safer activity is often easier and more effective than repeatedly saying "no."
